The Librarian: Quest for the Spear

A perpetual student becomes the guardian of legendary artifacts.

Last updated

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear is a 2004 American made-for-television fantasy-adventure film and the first entry in the Librarian franchise. It originally aired on the cable channel TNT on December 5, 2004, and stars Noah Wyle as Flynn Carsen, a perpetual student who becomes the guardian of powerful artifacts hidden beneath the New York City Metropolitan Public Library. The story follows his globe-trotting mission to recover the Spear of Destiny before an evil cult can obtain it.

Plot

Flynn Carsen has spent his thirties as a permanent student, collecting 22 degrees. His professor, Harris, along with Flynn’s mother Margie, finally boots him out of college—but not before arranging for him to earn a 23rd degree mid-semester. They’ve just finished building a one-twentieth scale model of the Great Pyramid, topped with a gold capstone. Both Harris and Margie tell Flynn he has no real-world experience and needs to live outside academia.

Soon after, Flynn gets an invitation to work at the Metropolitan Public Library. There he learns the role of “Librarian” has existed for millennia. His job is to safeguard historical and magical artifacts kept in a hidden alternate dimension called the Library, far beneath the city. The collection includes Pandora’s Box, Tesla’s Death Ray, the Holy Grail, the transmuted body of King Midas, and Excalibur—which is sentient and fiercely guards the other items.

Judson, the Library’s head, explains that one of three pieces of the Spear of Destiny has been stolen by the Serpent Brotherhood, a cult. Flynn is chosen to find the other two pieces. He’s sent to the Amazon rainforest with a book written in the untranslated “Language of the Birds.”

On the flight, Serpent Brotherhood members ambush Flynn. A woman rescues him by forcing him out of the plane mid-air. After landing, he discovers she is Nicole Noone, sent by Judson as his Guardian. Nicole once fell in love with the previous Librarian, Edward Wilde, and blames herself for his death.

She resists forming any bond with Flynn. Together, they face waterfalls, a friendly local tribe, collapsing bridges, and Maya death traps. Flynn’s vast knowledge and Nicole’s physical skills get them through with little trouble.

They recover the second spear piece, but are immediately captured by the Brotherhood and by Wilde himself—who faked his death and leads the cult. Wilde is about to shoot Nicole when Flynn steps in front of her. He agrees to find the final spear piece in exchange for her life.

Sequels

The Librarian franchise expanded with its first sequel, Return to King Solomon's Mines, which debuted on TNT on December 3, 2006, and hit DVD on December 19. The second follow-up, Curse of the Judas Chalice, arrived on December 7, 2008.

A one-hour TV series titled The Librarians launched on TNT on December 7, 2014, with a ten-episode first season, running for four seasons total. A second series, The Librarians: The Next Chapter, premiered on May 25, 2025. Nicole Noone, played by Rachel Nichols, is absent from the other films; her storyline is picked up in season 4 of the TV series.
