Star Trek: Infinite
A 4X grand strategy game set in the Star Trek universe.
Star Trek: Infinite is a 4X grand strategy game from Argentine developer Nimble Giant Entertainment and publisher Paradox Interactive. Players command one of four major Star Trek civilizations—the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, or Cardassians—as they explore, colonize, and interact with minor powers and rival empires through diplomacy, trade, or combat. A significant portion of the experience involves handling both scripted and emergent events, many of which reference or adapt moments from the Star Trek franchise. The game launched on Windows and macOS on October 12, 2023, and on March 27, 2024, Paradox announced that no further updates would be released.
Each faction has a unique mission tree and abilities that align with its lore: the Federation emphasizes exploration and diplomacy, the Klingons focus on warfare, the Cardassians specialize in espionage, and the Romulans rely on stealth. The game includes planets and political scenarios from *The Next Generation*, such as larger states supporting Bajoran independence from the Cardassian Union. Federation players can use the Enterprise’s focus tree to recruit characters like Data, Worf, and Deanna Troi, who grant bonuses on the NCC-1701-D. Other Federation figures, such as Spock and Benjamin Sisko, also appear. Event chains for each faction let players engage with major storylines from the Star Trek universe. A ship designer allows customization of vessels based on franchise designs, or players can use an auto-design feature. Many mechanics are drawn from an earlier build of Paradox’s *Stellaris*.
Reception was mixed. Metacritic rates it as “mixed or average,” and Steam reviews are similarly mixed. IGN’s Will Borger gave it 5/10, calling it “mediocre,” with most criticism aimed at bugs and glitches that sometimes broke functionality. Preliminary reviews before September 2023 were more favorable: Mick Fraser described it as “huge, complex, and a Trekkie’s dream,” while Borger’s early preview noted it brought Star Trek to 4X gaming like “Star Trek-themed spreadsheets” but could feel overwhelming. PC Gamer’s Russell Adderson called it “the Star Trek game of my dreams,” praising the mission trees and lore use. Polygon noted that, like *Stellaris*, warfare was the weakest element, but found the review version “already promising” and expected deeper content given Paradox’s history of post-launch support.

Lore & Background
Star Trek: Infinite places players in control of one of four interstellar civilizations from the Star Trek franchise: the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, or Cardassians. Each faction has its own mission tree and unique abilities aligned with lore-based play styles—the Federation focuses on exploration and diplomacy, the Klingons on warfare, the Cardassians on spying, and the Romulans on stealth. The game features planets and political events from The Next Generation, such as larger states supporting Bajoran independence from the Cardassian Union. Players as the Federation can use the Enterprise focus tree to obtain characters like Data, Worf, and Deanna Troi, who provide bonuses on the NCC-1701-D; other characters such as Spock and Benjamin Sisko also appear. Event chains allow interaction with major Star Trek events of the time period. A ship designer lets players modify ships based on basic Star Trek designs, or use auto-design. The game uses many mechanics and systems from Paradox Interactive's Stellaris, built off an earlier build.
