The team was named after the Philadelphia Warriors, a minor league team founded in 1917 by Eddie Gottlieb, Harry Passon, and Hughie Black. The Warriors won their first championship in the 1946–47 season, led by Joe Fulks. They won another championship in Philadelphia in 1955–56. In 1962, the franchise relocated to San Francisco and became the San Francisco Warriors. The name changed to the Golden State Warriors in 1971. As Golden State, they won championships in 1974–75, 2014–15, 2016–17, 2017–18, and 2021–22.
