Postwar Japan faces Godzilla in Takashi Yamazaki's 2023 film.
Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 film written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also did its visual effects. Set in postwar Japan, it stars Ryunosuke Kamiki as a former kamikaze pilot with post-traumatic stress after an encounter with Godzilla.

The supporting cast includes Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki. It is the 37th Godzilla film and the fifth of the Reiwa era.
Toho could not make another live-action Godzilla until 2020 because of its Legendary contract. Yamazaki devised the plot in March 2019, and a COVID-19 delay gave him three years to work on the script.
