Titanus Mosura

Awakened by Jia's call to unite Titans against a new ice age.

Her rebirth is directly tied to Jia, the last known survivor of Skull Island's Iwi people, who serves as the key to reawakening her. Unlike previous encounters driven solely by external threats like Mechagodzilla, this iteration sees Mothra intervening in a conflict between Kong and an enraged Godzilla. After Kong surfaces in Cairo calling for aid, a brief fight ensues until Mothra arrives to soothe the King of Monsters, facilitating their reunion against the tyrannical Skar King.

Quick Facts

Common name: Mothra

Lore & Background

The film establishes that Mothra was once dormant until the Skar King's return threatened the surface world. Hieroglyphics uncovered in a subterranean temple revealed a past where the Skar King waged war on Godzilla's species, triggering an ice age, before being trapped deep within Hollow Earth. These same inscriptions indicated that Jia is essential to reawakening Mothra. When Jia successfully awakens her, Mothra immediately intervenes in the surface conflict between Kong and Godzilla, acting as a mediator to stop their battle. Her presence allows the two Titans to return to Hollow Earth to face the Skar King's forces, proving her role as a unifier rather than just a combatant.

Reader's Guide

Her awakening is conditional upon Jia's telepathic connection with the Iwi tribe. In combat scenarios within the film, she does not rely on brute force but acts as a stabilizing presence; for instance, she calms Godzilla when he attacks Kong in Cairo. This intervention is crucial for forming the alliance needed to defeat the Skar King and Shimo. She also aids in restoring order after the battle by helping restore the protective barrier of the Iwi's home and closing the portals to the surface.

The film reveals that Jia chose to stay with her people rather than her adoptive mother, Dr. Ilene Andrews, after Mothra restored the protective barrier of their home.
Mothra was reborn as a result of a telepathic distress call sent by the Iwi tribe living beneath portals in Hollow Earth.
