Akiko is an orphaned baby rescued by Noriko Ōishi after the bombing of Tokyo. She is supported by Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot suffering from survivor's guilt, who begins helping Noriko care for her.

Akiko's origins are rooted in the devastation of World War II. After the bombing of Tokyo killed her parents, she was rescued by Noriko Ōishi, a woman whose own parents died in the same attack. Kōichi Shikishima, returning home after the war, begins supporting both Noriko and Akiko, forming an unconventional family unit. The three live together in a small home, with Kōichi working on a minesweeper to provide for them. When Kōichi plans a suicide attack against Godzilla, he leaves Akiko in the care of his neighbor Sumiko, entrusting her with the child he hopes to save. After the battle, Sumiko gives Kōichi a telegram that leads him to a hospital, where he reunites with Noriko—who survived the Ginza attack—and presumably returns to Akiko, completing the family circle.
