The episode includes multiple songs written by Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Whoopi Goldberg makes a guest appearance, reprising her role as NYADA dean Carmen Tibideaux. Recurring characters who appear are Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Kurt’s father Burt Hummel (Mike O’Malley), and Funny Girl producer Sidney Greene (Michael Lerner).
Six tracks from the episode are collected on a six-song EP called Glee: The Music, Bash. The EP features an original song, “Colorblind,” performed by Riley, along with her cover of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” The remaining four are Sondheim compositions: “Broadway Baby” from Follies, sung by Michele and Criss; “No One Is Alone” from Into the Woods, performed by Michele, Criss, and Colfer; “Not While I’m Around” from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, credited to Criss, Michele, Riley, and Chord Overstreet (though Criss delivers it as a solo in the episode); and “I’m Still Here” from Follies, performed by Colfer.
