Plot

Months after the end of the school year, the McKinley graduates now living in New York City face new challenges. Rachel Berry is a leading lady on Broadway, Kurt Hummel shares an apartment with fiancé Blaine Anderson and Sam Evans, and film school student Artie Abrams has difficulty navigating the city in his wheelchair. Mercedes Jones arrives in New York to record a new album.

Production

The fifth season of the show relocates to New York City for its remaining episodes, picking up a few months after the previous two-part story that ended the school year and dissolved the glee club. Only five main cast members appear in this installment: Michele, Colfer, McHale, Criss, and Overstreet. The other regulars are credited but do not actually show up. Recurring characters include Mercedes Jones, Elliott "Starchild" Gilbert, and producer Sidney Greene. A six-track EP, also titled after the episode, features six songs: "Downtown" performed by the five main cast members; "You Make Me Feel So Young" sung by Criss and Colfer; "Best Day of My Life" by Criss and Overstreet; "Don't Sleep in the Subway" by Michele and McHale; "People" from Funny Girl sung by Michele; and "Rockstar" performed by Lambert and Colfer.

Reception

The episode drew 2.59 million American viewers and a 0.9/3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, tying series lows with "Puppet Master" and "City of Angels." It finished fourth in its time slot and thirteenth overall for the night. Critics praised the episode. Rae Votta of Billboard called it the best episode of the series so far. Suzanne Davis of TV Fanatic rated it three out of five stars. Jodi Walker of Entertainment Weekly noted the show felt like a different series, comparing it to a cool New York cousin of the classic version. MaryAnn Sleasman of TV.com said the New York setting made the show feel exciting, fresh, and big, and she complimented the musical numbers for their sophisticated, glamorous feel, extended dances, muted colors, and sweeping scenery.
