Joui Army

The fallen warriors who fought for Earth's freedom against the stars.

The Joui Army was a rebel force that fought in the Joui War, a battle in which the alien Amanto defeated the former samurai defenders of Earth. Gintoki Sakata once fought in this war until a tragic event where he was unable to protect what he was fighting for. During that period, he was known as the "White Demon" (Shiroyasha) due to his silver hair and white coat he wore in battle, which, combined with his impressive capabilities as a swordsman, made him famous among his comrades and struck fear into Amanto. The army was formed by those who refused to kneel to the alien invaders, fighting a losing battle with outdated weapons against superior technology.

Lore & Background

The Joui Army was composed of rebels including Gintoki Sakata, Kotaro Katsura, and Shinsuke Takasugi, who were classmates taught by Shoyo Yoshida. Shoyo was unjustly accused of trying to raise an army, which resulted in his capture, with Gintoki and his friends entering the Joui War to rescue their teacher. During a time in the Joui War when Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi were captured by Tendosho, under orders by Sada Sada, Gintoki was forced to execute his master without any choice before his master's final bidding to him right in front of his comrades' eyes. After his master's death, Gintoki chose to open a freelance business. The war ended not with victory, but with a surrender that saved many lives but left the soldiers branded as traitors or ghosts. Key figures like Katsura and Takasugi survived to continue the struggle from the shadows, while others like Gintoki chose to live quietly amidst the ruins of their ideals.

Reader's Guide

The Joui Army represents the organized human resistance movement formed during the Amanto invasion crisis. Their primary goal was the expulsion of alien forces and the restoration of a sovereign Edo free from foreign control. Unlike the Shogunate, which sought stability through cooperation with the invaders, the Joui prioritized freedom above order, even at the cost of their lives. Membership consisted largely of samurai clans loyal to the old ways, though ronin and commoners joined as desperation grew. Notable commanders included Gintoki Sakata, Katsura Kotaro, and Takasugi Shinsuke. After the war's conclusion, the group was officially disbanded by force, scattering its members across society. In the current timeline, remnants of the Joui continue to operate underground. They influence major conflicts through ideological successors rather than a standing army. Their history provides crucial context for the protagonists' motivations, highlighting themes of sacrifice, betrayal, and the burden of survival. Understanding their fall explains why characters like Gintoki fight to protect small moments of peace today.
