Ghost Recon Wildlands takes place in Bolivia in July 2019. The country has become increasingly unstable as the Santa Blanca Cartel, a Mexican drug cartel led by the brutal and religious boss El Sueno, takes control of several regions and turns Bolivia into the world's largest producer of cocaine.

To fight the cartel the Bolivian government sets up La Unidad, an elite special forces group, but after months of fighting the two sides agree a truce and some Unidad personnel secretly work for Santa Blanca. Nomad's fireteam enters Bolivia with their CIA contact Karen Bowman as part of Operation Kingslayer, a joint CIA, DEA and JSOC operation.
