Lore & Background

The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of 'long cloud' for Auroa. Auroa had a population of 264 in the 2023 New Zealand census. Auroa School opened in 1891 as Ratana School and was renamed Auroa School in 1898. The Auroa Association Football club was formed in May 1907.

In Their Own Story

The rain came sideways, the way it does on Auroa when the mountain winds hit the thermal layer above the canopy. Kestrel wiped saltwater from her goggles and looked up. The crash site was a jagged wound in the jungle floor—twisted fuselage, scattered gear, the smell of burning hydraulic fluid mixing with wet earth and frangipani. Somewhere above, a Mountains Inc. patrol drone swept its blue searchlight across the treeline, patient, methodical, already logging their positions. "They know we're here," she said, not as a question. Behind her, the island's skyline caught the last copper light of dusk: the capital's towers rising like a circuit board against the clouds, every window a sensor, every street a data stream. Auroa in the dark was beautiful. Auroa in the dark was also a cage with ten million locks. She checked her weapon. Checked her team. The jungle swallowed them, and the island watched.

Reader's Guide
