Lore & Background

Ubisoft was founded by the five Guillemot brothers – Christian, Claude, Gérard, Michel, and Yves – on 28 March 1986 as Ubi Soft Entertainment S.A. The company first achieved commercial and critical success with its 1995 platform game Rayman. In 1996, it began expanding worldwide, opening studios in Shanghai, Montreal, and Milan. In 2000, Ubisoft purchased Red Storm Entertainment, gaining access to the Tom Clancy's series, including Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. In recent years, Ubisoft has struggled financially, reporting a strong decline in revenue in 2024 and laying off 700 employees in 2025.

In Their Own Story

A developer in the Paris studio pulls up the mission timeline for the fourth Ghost Recon entry and scrolls through the operator call-signs, the extraction windows, the wind vectors over the Bolivian highlands. On the monitor, four silhouettes crouch on a ridge line, their thermal signatures flickering against the cold desert sky. She nudges the AI pathfinding parameter, watches a patrol reroute, and whispers, "There. That's the breath between the shots." The build compiles. Somewhere in a player's living room, a squad will load in, check their gear, and step off the cliff edge into the grey dawn. Ubisoft's job, she thinks, is to make sure the dawn is worth stepping into.
