Galaxies And Their Properties (19)

• BL Lacertae object — Active galactic nuclei with rapid variability and featureless spectra.
• Brightest cluster galaxy — The most massive galaxies, found at cluster centers.
• Dark galaxy — Hypothesized galaxies made of dark matter, with no visible stars.
• Dark matter halo — Invisible mass scaffold that shapes and binds every galaxy.
• Dwarf elliptical galaxy — Small elliptical galaxies common in groups and clusters.
• Field galaxy — A galaxy gravitationally alone, not in a group or cluster.
• Galactic halo — Extended spherical component of a galaxy beyond its visible parts.
• Galactic tide — Tidal force from a galaxy's gravitational field.
• Grand design spiral galaxy — Spiral galaxy with prominent, well-defined continuous arms.
• Hubble sequence — A morphological galaxy classification scheme published by Edwin Hubble in 1926.
• Interacting galaxy — Galaxies whose gravity disturbs one another.
• Low surface brightness galaxy — Diffuse galaxies dominated by dark matter, with faint stellar disks.
• Luminous infrared galaxy — Galaxies that outshine the Sun by 100 billion times in infrared.
• Magellanic spiral — Dwarf spiral galaxies with a single prominent arm, often complex.
• Peculiar galaxy — Galaxies of unusual size, shape, or composition.
• Ring galaxy — A galaxy with a ring-shaped structure of stars and gas.
• Satellite galaxy — Smaller galaxies bound to larger hosts, key to cosmology.
• Type-cD galaxy — Supergiant elliptical galaxies at the centres of rich clusters.
• Unbarred spiral galaxy — A spiral galaxy without a central bar structure.
