Supply Drop
A floating lifeline of fuel and scrap drifting through the void.
The Supply Drop is a common random encounter in the FTL universe where an automated drone or ship delivers essential resources to passing vessels. These drops often contain fuel, scrap, and occasionally food or shield modules, serving as a vital lifeline for captains struggling with dwindling reserves. While seemingly benign, these encounters can sometimes hide dangers if the drop is corrupted by pirates or malfunctioning systems.
Lore & Background
While most drops are harmless deliveries, the galaxy is not always kind. Pirates frequently intercept these shipments, turning them into traps designed to lure unsuspecting captains close before ambushing them. Conversely, some drops may be malfunctioning, carrying unstable cargo or corrupted data that can infect a ship's systems if boarded carelessly. For many captains, spotting the faint glow of a supply drone against the starfield is a moment of hope mixed with caution.
Reader's Guide
When a Supply Drop appears on the radar, the player must decide how to retrieve it. The primary option is usually to send a crew member over via shuttle to board and manually secure the cargo. This grants access to better loot but risks exposing the boarding party to hidden enemies or traps inside the pod. Alternatively, players can attempt to tow the object using their ship's tractor beam if available, though this consumes energy and may be impossible against heavy debris.
Some drops require a successful hacking mini-game to unlock the cargo bay remotely, which can fail and trigger an alarm. If the drop is hostile or trapped, engaging it with weapons before boarding might clear the threat but could destroy the valuable contents inside. Successful retrieval typically grants fuel, scrap, or modules, significantly aiding progression. Failure often results in lost crew members or wasted time drifting through dangerous sectors.
