Danny Townsend

Australian sports administrator and former A-League CEO.

Last updated

Danny Townsend is an Australian sports administrator and businessman who served as chief executive of the Australian Professional Leagues. Before that, he was CEO of A-League Men club Sydney FC from 2017 to 2021. Townsend also had a short semi-professional football career in the old National Soccer League, playing for Sydney United and Parramatta Power before a knee injury ended his playing days at age 23.

Early life and football career

Townsend grew up on the Northern Beaches and played youth football in the Manly Warringah Football association. In 1997, after breaking into the Manly Dolphins senior team in the NSW Second Division, he was signed by Dave Mitchell, manager of Sydney United in the National Soccer League.

In his second season at Edensor Park, Sydney United won the league by a single point but lost the Grand Final 3–2 to South Melbourne, missing the 1999 Oceania Club Championship. Townsend followed Mitchell to Parramatta Power, playing two seasons before a knee injury ended his stint. He returned to the Northern Beaches to play for Manly-Warringah Dolphins in the NSW Second Division under Gary van Egmond, retiring from football at age 23 due to injuries.

Business career

After his playing days, Townsend completed an MBA in international marketing and took on the role of commercial director at the Australian Jockey Club. There, he partnered with Paul Smith to found Repucom, a global sports marketing agency.

When Nielsen Sports bought Repucom in 2016, Townsend became its global managing director. Living abroad in this capacity, he collaborated with major clients such as PepsiCo, Emirates, Mastercard, Red Bull, the NBA, the NFL, the English Premier League, and the Asian Football Confederation. Townsend had earlier earned a B.S.S. in Sports Science from the University of New South Wales during his playing career.

Return to Australia

In August 2017, Townsend was named CEO of A-League Men club Sydney FC, replacing Tony Pignata, who became CEO of Perth Glory. During his tenure, Sydney FC's men's and women's teams won eight trophies under Graham Arnold, Steve Corica, and Ante Juric. Townsend oversaw planning and development of the club's Centre of Excellence at Macquarie University and the transition to the new Sydney Football Stadium. In December 2020, Football Australia relinquished control of the domestic leagues to the newly formed Australian Professional Leagues (APL), which took over operational, commercial, and marketing responsibilities.

Townsend was announced as CEO of the APL. In December 2022, Townsend and the APL announced that hosting rights for the A-League Grand Final would be in Sydney, via a deal with New South Wales Government body Events NSW, breaking the tradition that the highest-ranked team hosted. The move drew criticism from fans, players, and pundits; APL Director and Melbourne Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro resigned, as clubs had not been consulted. Townsend defended the deal, reportedly worth $10 million over three years, stating it would create a week-long 'festival of football' in Sydney.
