La cueva (film)

La cueva (released in English as *The Cave* or *In Darkness We Fall*) is a 2014 Spanish-language found footage horror film directed by Alfredo Montero. It first screened on January 25, 2014, at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The story follows five friends who enter a remote cave and soon find themselves fighting to survive.

Five friends travel to the island of Formentera for a vacation of fun and indulgence. During an outing, they discover a cave in a cliff and decide to explore it. Before long, they realize they are lost and shift their focus to finding the exit. They fail and are forced to spend the night, and their mental state begins to deteriorate. With no food, water, sunlight, or cell phone reception, the group grows panicked and starts hallucinating. Their survival ultimately depends on choices that permanently change them.

The cast includes Marta Castellote, Xoel Fernández, Eva García-Vacas, Marcos Ortiz, and Jorge Páez.

Fangoria rated the film two out of four skulls, noting uneven pacing and familiar elements but calling it "an unsettling portrait of humanity." Twitch Film observed that viewers could likely predict events due to genre similarities, but felt the "impressive, strong third act ensures it will have its fans."

At the 2014 Málaga Film Festival, the film won the Silver Biznaga for Best New Director and the Special Jury Prize in the Zonazine competition.
