Synopsis

A sudden worldwide storm caused 98% of Earth's human population to vanish, leaving the survivors to face zombie-like husks that attacked the living. Survivors built storm shields to clear the clouds overhead and reduce husk attacks, establishing bases across the globe. The player commands one such base, venturing beyond the shield to gather resources, survivors, and allies to expand the shield and restore normalcy.

Development

Fortnite was revealed at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards with a trailer introduced by Epic's former design director Cliff Bleszinski. Creative lead Donald Mustard stated in 2017 that the announcement came three weeks after the idea was conceived, before the game was made. The title began as an internal game jam project after the completion of Gears of War 3, marking a departure from Epic's previous work. Bleszinski described it as a world of exploration, scavenging, building, and survival, differing from Gears of War. Producer Roger Collum said the game grew from combining building games like Minecraft and Terraria with shooting games like Gears of War, comparing it to making peanut butter cups. When shown to other developers, the concept was recognized as an idea others had but never pursued, indicating potential.

Reception

By July 26, 2017, Fortnite had sold over 500,000 digital pre-order copies, and by August 18, 2017, it surpassed one million players. After introducing x-ray loot boxes in February 2019, Epic Games faced a class-action lawsuit claiming the former loot box model was predatory for not reporting rare item odds. Epic offered to settle in February 2021, crediting all Save the World players with 1,000 V-bucks, with lawyers stating it was the right thing to do regarding random item loot boxes.
