Development

On April 7, 2022, Epic Games announced a partnership with The Lego Group to create a "metaverse" for younger audiences, with Lego's parent company Kirkbi A/S investing US$1 billion into Epic Games. On November 21, 2023, Lego uploaded a teaser on Twitter showing the Supply Llama made of Lego bricks, confirming the collaboration. Over 1,200 Fortnite outfits were converted into Lego minifigures at launch, with more promised by early 2024. On December 20, 2023, YouTube personality MrBeast became the first Icon Series outfit holder to receive a Lego style.

A Star Wars update on May 3, 2024, added a Rebel Village island where players repair and improve it after the Empire crashes. At the 2024 GDC, Epic and Lego announced plans for Fortnite creators to use Lego elements and styles in Unreal Editor for Fortnite, allowing them to publish Lego Islands adhering to ESRB E10+ and PEGI 7 ratings, with parental controls. Epic announced Brick Life, a social life roleplay game similar to Grand Theft Auto, for release on December 12, 2024, and renamed the survival mode Lego Fortnite Odyssey, making the main game a hub for future Lego-based games.

A limited-time mode, Lego Expeditions, was introduced on June 18, 2025, as a cooperative action-adventure for up to 4 players with hero classes, but is no longer available.

Release

The preview for Lego Fortnite Odyssey was revealed during The Big Bang event from December 2 to December 3, 2023, alongside Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival. The game was released on December 7, 2023, for most platforms supporting the base game. At launch, it reached over 2.4 million concurrent users, temporarily becoming the most popular game mode, surpassing Battle Royale, Rocket Racing, Fortnite Festival, and Save the World.

Reception

The game received generally positive reviews from critics, though it was frequently compared to Minecraft. Phil Hornshaw of IGN gave it a 7/10, describing a solid foundation that Epic Games would likely build on, but noting it felt somewhat empty at launch with thin building aspects and a lack of real goals. James Herd of Destructoid discussed the game's target audience, suggesting the mode was designed to address concerns about violence in other pre-existing modes.
