Dineen played for the Hartford Whalers, Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators, and Columbus Blue Jackets over an NHL career spanning 1984–2003. He was selected in the third round of the 1982 NHL entry draft by the Hartford Whalers. Dineen scored the final goal in Whalers history on April 13, 1997, and the first goal in Carolina Hurricanes history. He served as captain of the Flyers, Whalers, and Hurricanes at various points. He played in the 1984 Winter Olympics and multiple World Ice Hockey Championships.
