Kenshiro

You are already dead.

Kenshiro is the protagonist of the Fist of the North Star manga series, created by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara. As the rightful successor to Hokuto Shinken, an ancient art of assassination that defeats adversaries through hidden meridian points, he navigates a post-apocalyptic world filled with ruffians and rival martial artists. His appearance draws heavily from Bruce Lee and Yūsaku Matsuda, while his iconic outfit is loosely based on Mel Gibson's costume in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Known as the 'Savior of the Century's End' and 'the Man with Seven Scars,' Kenshiro fights to protect survivors while confronting his three honorary brothers trained in the same deadly art.

Lore & Background

As the youngest of four adopted sons trained by Ryuken, Kenshiro was raised alongside Raoh, Toki, and Jagi in a post-nuclear-war Japan after being orphaned. He later sought peace with his fiancée Yulia until Jagi manipulated Shin, a rival from the Nanto Koshuken school, to defeat him. Shin engraved seven scars on Kenshiro's chest in the shape of the Big Dipper before leaving him for dead. While once forgiving, as seen when he killed Jagi after a failed assassination attempt, Kenshiro became merciless against old rivals like Shin and Raoh. Between encounters with his brothers, Toki focused on healing without pain, whereas Raoh sought to become the 'Conqueror of the Century's End' by ruling the wasteland with an iron fist.

Reader's Guide

Kenshiro is recognized as 'the Man with Seven Scars' due to the Big Dipper pattern on his chest and as the 'Savior of the Century's End.' His signature catchphrase, delivered just before an enemy dies, is 'You are already dead' (Omae wa mō shindeiru). In a 2007 Oricon survey of 1,000 people, he ranked third as the strongest manga character, behind only Son Goku and Doraemon. His design was refined by Buronson to be based primarily on Bruce Lee, with seven scars added for aesthetic coolness before their backstory (inflicted by the man who stole his love) was devised. The full name Kenshiro Kasumi appears only in a two-part prototype set in 1980s Japan and is reused for the protagonist of Fist of the Blue Sky, but serialized Kenshiro is referred to only by his given name in katakana.
