The Alliance

A union of Sihnon and Londinium blending American and Chinese influence under one flag.

The Alliance, formally known as the Union of Allied Planets, stands as a powerful fictional corporate supergovernment and law-enforcement organization within the Firefly franchise. It controls the majority of territory in the known universe, stemming from the alliance between two core worlds: Sihnon, an East and Southeast Asian-themed planet led by the People's Republic of China (PRC), and Londinium, a world with Northern American and Western European influences led by the United States of America (USA). This merger created a multi-racial, multi-ethnic society where English and Mandarin Chinese are commonly used languages, with most inhabitants being bilingual. The Alliance retains a mixture of both Western and Eastern cultures from Earth-That-Was.

Lore & Background

Originally composed solely of 'core worlds,' the Alliance fought the Unification War several years prior to the show's timeframe to bring all colonized worlds under its control. The Independent Faction, known as 'Browncoats,' resisted this centralization, attempting to keep outer worlds autonomous. The war raged for several years with heavy casualties on both sides until the Alliance emerged victorious, signing an armistice that secured their control over the entire system. The organization operates a massive fleet of spaceships resembling floating cities, carrying smaller gunships and even nurseries. Ground troops are nicknamed 'purple bellies' to contrast with the Browncoats. Crew members wear gray uniforms similar to Imperial German Army attire from World War I, while officers in the movie Serenity wear blue. The military structure remains largely undefined, featuring both naval ranks like Commander and ground force ranks such as Colonel and General.

Reader's Guide

The Alliance functions as a melding of American and Chinese influences, resulting in a society where Mandarin is often superior for written public communications and polite address between strangers; for instance, an agent in 'Ariel' answers an intercom with '你好' (ni hao) rather than hello. The Blue Sun corporation acts as a powerful conglomerate within the Alliance, with creator Joss Whedon noting that 'practically half the government was Blue Sun,' and their agents are known as 'Hands of Blue.' While often viewed as authoritarian by those on the frontier, creator Joss Whedon has stated the Alliance sometimes represents a 'beautiful shining light of democracy' doing good things, similar to the US view of itself in World War II, though it can also engage in black ops. The organization utilizes local security companies and possesses advanced weaponry alluding to the Weyland-Yutani corporation from Alien.
