Patience

The dangerous associate who once shot Mal and now holds his fate—and stolen goods—in her hands on Whitefall.

Patience is an old business associate of Captain Malcolm Reynolds who appears in the original pilot episode 'Serenity'. She operates as a small-time crime lord residing on the planet Whitefall. After the crew of Serenity fails to sell stolen Alliance cargo to the crime lord Badger on Persephone due to an Alliance bulletin, Mal decides to attempt a sale with Patience instead. Although Zoe warns Mal that she shot him during their last meeting, he proceeds out of desperation to dispose of the 'hot cargo'. This encounter serves as a critical turning point in the episode's plot.

Lore & Background

Patience resides on Whitefall, a barren world where she commands a group of henchmen. Her history with Captain Reynolds is defined by violence; as Zoe notes, Patience 'shot Mal the last time they met'. When Serenity arrives with crates containing 'Genuine A grade foodstuffs' (which look like chocolate), Mal meets her in a barren valley alongside Zoe and Jayne Cobb. Despite her past aggression, she agrees to inspect the goods. However, upon learning the location where the rest of the cargo is buried, Patience attempts to kill Mal and his crew. The confrontation ends with Mal, Zoe, and Jayne gunning down Patience's men. In a display of mercy or pragmatism, Mal leaves Patience alive but seizes the money he was promised for the delivery.

Reader's Guide

Patience appears exclusively in 'Serenity', the first episode produced (though aired second) on December 20, 2002. She represents the unpredictable risks of working on the fringes of space. Key facts: Patience lives on Whitefall; she has a violent history with Mal (having shot him previously); she is killed? No, she survives the encounter but loses her men and money; she deals in stolen Alliance goods via intermediaries like Badger. Her role underscores the theme that business on the fringe often turns deadly when alliances shift or information leaks to the Alliance.
