The Rainbow Road to Oz
A proposed Disney film that never reached production.
Last updated
The Rainbow Road to Oz was a proposed live-action film from Walt Disney Studios, planned for the 1950s but never completed. Inspired by L. Frank Baum's early 20th century Oz novels, it was to feature several Mouseketeers, including Darlene Gillespie as Dorothy Gale and Annette Funicello as Princess Ozma.
The project was announced in July 1957, and preview segments aired on September 11, 1957, on the Disneyland fourth-anniversary show. The film was shelved a few months later, possibly due to budgetary concerns or doubts about the young actors' ability to carry a feature. Songs written for the film were later rerecorded for a 1969 Disneyland Records album.
