Biopic of the R&B and hip hop trio TLC.
Last updated
The film is a 2013 American biographical television movie about the R&B and hip hop trio TLC.[1] It stars Keke Palmer as Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, Niatia "Lil Mama" Kirkland as Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Drew Sidora as Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins.[1] The film's executive producers included the actual Thomas and Watkins.[1]
Making and release
The film was directed by Charles Stone III and written by Kate Lanier.[1] It is named after the group's 1994 album CrazySexyCool.[1] It also became the highest-rated original film premiere in VH1 history.[2] TLC released a compilation album, 20, via LaFace and Epic Records on October 15, 2013.[3]
The album's track listing was largely inspired by the film's release.[3] The two surviving members of TLC consulted on and executive produced the film.[4] They also announced they had re-signed with LA Reid and Epic Records for the album release.[4] VH1 first broadcast the movie on October 21, 2013.[2]
With 4.5 million viewers tuning in, the broadcast became 2013's top-rated television film premiere.[2] A DVD version became available on October 21, 2014.[3]
What the cited sources add
Paskin noted that the movie "nails TLC’s particular infectious, rambunctious spirit"[5] Paskin also stated that the three actresses "all bring more to the parts than just looking like them" and "nail these montage scenes and their vibe of deep, silly friendship"[5] The film tells the story of the group from 1990 to 2002, when Lopes died in a car accident in Honduras.[5] A Deadline Hollywood article highlighted that the teaser includes painstaking reenactments of the group's music videos, including "Waterfalls"[4]
The same article noted that Lil Mama joined T-Boz and Chilli at the Mixtape Festival performing in place of Lopes.[4]
