Josie and the Pussycats (film)
A girl band uncovers a subliminal music conspiracy.
Last updated
Universal Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures co-produced the 2001 musical comedy film Josie and the Pussycats.[1] The three leads playing the Pussycats are Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson; the supporting cast includes Alan Cumming, Parker Posey, Gabriel Mann, Paulo Costanzo, and Missi Pyle.[1]
Making and release
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Zooey Deschanel auditioned for Josie, but the studio did not want an unknown.[2] Rachael Leigh Cook was cast after the directors remembered her audition for their earlier film Can't Hardly Wait.[3][4] Cook later said she was surprised she got the role because she "cannot sing at all".[3] Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo provided Cook's singing voice, while backing vocals came from Cook, Reid, Dawson, and Bif Naked.[5]
The film was shot entirely in Vancouver, Canada.[1] The soundtrack was released on March 27, 2001, and was certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies.[6] The directors' first concept for the film was based on the 1972 TV show's 16-episode story arc, but they later shifted to drawing ideas from early-2000s music culture and the show TRL.[7]
What the cited sources add
The same source notes that the film opened in seventh place with $4.5 million and received less than glowing reviews.[7] The Collider interview with Rachael Leigh Cook confirms that her audition for Can't Hardly Wait led to her casting in Josie and the Pussycats.[4] Mandel's article also reports that Kay Hanley performed Josie's singing parts in a manner similar to "Singin' In The Rain".[8]
