Plot

Elina, having twice defeated Laverna, receives an invitation to train as Azura's apprentice at the Crystal Palace. There she meets a group of fellow apprentices: Linden, an oread fairy with the ability to speak to animals; Shimmer, a tiny, arrogant pixie with pigtails; Lumina, a moon fairy who can see the future; Sunburst, a sparkle fairy who takes an immediate dislike to Elina; Faben, a fairy with a narcissistic personality; and Glee, a wood nymph who becomes Elina's closest friend. Glee also owns a puffball named Dizzle, who develops a crush on Bibble. Meanwhile, Laverna, the Enchantress's jealous sister, schemes to stop the annual spring ritual known as the Flight of Spring, intending to cast Fairytopia into a decade-long winter. Elina excels in her early lessons, which only deepens Sunburst's resentment, and a quarrel between the two results in a scolding from Azura. Laverna escapes her exile by tricking Elina and Linden into reversing a spell on what appears to be a bewitched frog, freeing her. The pair rush back to warn the palace, but the guardians dismiss their claim because Laverna left a decoy at the bogs, though Azura takes the warning seriously. Laverna locates Sunburst in the garden, captures her, and uses a spell to assume her identity, slipping into the palace unnoticed. In this disguise, she poisons all the guardians, leaving them in comas. With the guardians incapacitated, the Enchantress calls the apprentices together and tells them they must perform the Flight of Spring themselves, despite their incomplete training. As they practice the magical dance that alone can summon the rainbow ending winter, a small mistake reveals that Sunburst is actually Laverna. Elina halts the dance and, aided by Bibble and Dizzle, goes to find the real Sunburst. Knowing that sparkle fairies are vulnerable to water, Elina and her companions head to the river, where they discover Sunburst trapped inside a magic bubble. Elina returns to the garden with the genuine Sunburst. Forced to drop her disguise, Laverna demands the Enchantress surrender her crown or the ritual will be ruined. The Enchantress complies and is imprisoned, but Laverna breaks her word and fires a magical ray to shatter the rainbow.
