Detention (2011 film)
A time-traveling slasher comedy set in detention.
Last updated
Joseph Kahn and Mark Palermo co-wrote the 2011 American black comedy slasher film Detention, which Kahn directed.[1] Detention* had its first screening during March 2011 at the SXSW festival held in Austin, Texas.[1]
Making and release
Principal photography began in Los Angeles in August 2010 and finished in October 2010, with Kahn largely financing the film himself.[2] A Canadian release followed on April 27, 2012.[3] Christopher Probst, the Director of Photography, used Red One digital cameras to capture the film.[2] Marcelle Gravel, a designer known for music videos and commercials, handled the film's production design.[2]
Worldwide distribution rights for the film were obtained by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.[3] Samuel Goldwyn Films gave Detention a limited theatrical release in the United States on April 13, 2012.[3]
What the cited sources add
Elias noted the film is broken into Roman-numeral-ed chapters with absurd titles that riff on body-switching movies and time travel.[4] Gallman praised the film as "smart, funny, and equally full of splatstick violence and heart."[5] The film won the Youth Jury Prize at the 2011 Seattle International Film Festival.[6] London's Frightfest gave Detention the Biggest Surprise Award.[7]
At the 2011 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, the film received the L'Écran Fantastique Prize, and it also won the Midnight Extreme Award at the Sitges festival in Spain.[6]
