Third film adaptation of Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel.

The film received largely favorable reviews and grossed $160.8 million worldwide.[1][2]

Making and release

The project gained support after the success of The Princess Diaries (2001) proved female-led family films could be commercially viable.[3] Andrew Gunn, the producer, suggested to Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group president Nina Jacobson that they create either a fresh take on Freaky Friday or a revival of Witch Mountain.[3] Waters changed the mother character to be very proper and the daughter to be a defiant fan of alternative rock.[3] The Anna Coleman character was reworked into a teenager with a grunge style, and Lohan pointed to Avril Lavigne as a major inspiration for that look.[4]

Jamie Lee Curtis was chosen for her role only four days before filming started, following Jacobson's suggestion based on Curtis's work in True Lies.[5] The principal photography schedule ran from October 2002 through December 2002.[6] Walt Disney Home Entertainment put out the movie on DVD and VHS formats on December 16, 2003.[7]

What the cited sources add

The same article states that Raven-Symoné, Naya Rivera, Ashley Tisdale, Sophia Bush, and Kat Dennings all auditioned for band members.[8] In November 2023, Jamie Lee Curtis posted a selfie with Lohan on Instagram, teasing a potential return to their roles.[9][10] Curtis's caption referenced the end of the strike and the possibility of switching places again.[9]
