He later performed in traveling medicine shows, where a performer named Doctor Nubillo inspired his future use of turbans and capes. By the mid-1950s, Richard’s frenetic piano playing, pounding backbeat, and raspy vocals created a dynamic sound that laid the foundation for rock and roll. His 1955 hit "Tutti Frutti" crossed over to pop charts in the US and UK, followed by "Long Tall Sally" and fifteen more hits in under three years. He abandoned rock for born-again Christianity for five years before returning to tour Europe in 1962, where the Beatles opened for him. He is recognized as one of the first crossover black artists, drawing integrated audiences despite segregation.
