Position

The one letter code that decides where you stand on the pitch.

Position is the fundamental placement attribute printed on every player card in FIFA Ultimate Team. It designates the specific role a player fulfils on the pitch—ranging from Goalkeeper (GK) through the defensive, midfield, and attacking lines—and governs where that player may be slotted into your chosen formation. No card in the Ultimate Team ecosystem exists without a primary position, making it the single most universal piece of information on the card face.

Beyond simple placement, Position interacts with the chemistry system: adjacent positions on the pitch generate chemistry bonuses, while mismatched pairings reduce them. A player's secondary position, when present, offers tactical flexibility and is a key consideration when building a balanced starting XI.

Lore & Background

In the Ultimate Team card system, Position is less a decorative label and more the card's address. A striker card marked ST simply cannot be dropped into a central-midfield slot without the system flagging an invalid placement. This rigid mapping mirrors real football tactics, where a centre-back's movement, decision-making, and physical profile differ fundamentally from a winger's, and the card system encodes that distinction into a single two-letter code.

The four broad families—Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder, Attacker—form the backbone of every formation menu. Within each family, the specific position refines the role: a CDM sits deeper and more defensively than a CM; a LW cuts inside from the flank rather than holding a central channel. Players who carry a secondary position, such as a CM who also lists CDM, become particularly prized by managers seeking tactical depth without carrying an extra squad slot.

Chemistry, the hidden multiplier that raises or lowers a player's effective rating in a match, is calculated partly through position adjacency. Two players in neighbouring positions on the formation grid generate a positive chemistry link; players far apart or in mismatched roles do not. This makes Position not just a placement rule but an active statistical lever that can swing a card's in-game performance by several points.

Reader's Guide

Position is not a standalone card you pull from a pack; it is an attribute stamped onto every player card in Ultimate Team, from common bronze to rare gold to special-edition icons. Its 'rarity' is therefore universal—every card carries one, and no card exists without it. You acquire a specific position by obtaining the player card that lists that position as primary or secondary, whether through weekly packs, objective rewards, transfer-market purchases, or special event rewards.

The practical value of a position lies in its interaction with your formation and the chemistry grid. A player whose primary position matches an open slot in your formation is immediately usable; one whose secondary position matches is a flexible backup. In the community trading culture, dual-position players (for example, a CM/CDM) command a premium because they let a manager cover two tactical roles with one squad slot, reducing the need for a full bench.

When evaluating a card's worth in the transfer market, traders weigh position alongside rating, league, and chemistry. A 90-rated ST in a popular league will outprice a 90-rated LW in a less popular league partly because the ST slot is more contested in common formations. Position is the first filter: if the card does not fit your system, its rating is largely irrelevant.
