Rainy (Adventure Time character)
Small creature injured by Finn in the forest.
Last updated
Rainy is a minor character in the Adventure Time episode 'Another Way', voiced by Melissa Villaseñor. She is the wife of Pan and is accidentally injured by Finn during his quest for cyclops tears.
Plot
After Finn breaks his toes and flees from clown nurses, he treks into the forest seeking cyclops tears. Along the way, he meets resistance from forest denizens who insist he follow their directions.
Frustrated, Finn turns violent and accidentally injures a small creature named Rainy. This incident makes Finn realize his selfishness has hurt others. He later sings the song 'Melons' and eventually heals Rainy along with others he harmed.
Production
Rainy was voiced by Melissa Villaseñor. The character appears in 'Another Way', the twenty-third episode of the third season of Adventure Time, written and storyboarded by Tom Herpich and Bert Youn from a story by Mark Banker, Patrick McHale, Kent Osborne, and Pendleton Ward.
The joke of Rainy being run over by watermelons was inspired by a humorous video Herpich saw in his youth. The episode guest starred Gregg Turkington as a talking bush, and Maria Bamford voiced both the lead clown and the talking stump. Osborne voiced Pan, Rainy's husband, whose name originally was Brainstorm.
Reception
The episode 'Another Way' first aired on Cartoon Network on January 23, 2012. It was released on the 2013 Jake vs. Me-Mow DVD and later on the complete third season DVD on February 25, 2014. Reviews noted the episode's bizarre and disturbing elements, particularly the clown nurses and feet kissing. Dean Childers of TV Geek Army interpreted the clowns as a metaphor for Finn's fear of sexual exploration.
Tyler Foster of DVD Talk called the episode both creative and disturbing. A review from Nerdmelt Showroom advised viewers who dislike clowns or injured trees to skip the episode. Doug Walker reviewed it as part of the That Guy with the Glasses web series, calling it a return to form for the first season. Jori Laws expressed disgust at the feet-kissing plot point, and Herpich noted a friend was disturbed by it.
