Interstellar (film)
A crew travels through a wormhole to save humanity.
Last updated
The initial idea came from producer Lynda Obst and physicist Kip Thorne, who built it around Thorne's research into extraordinary cosmic phenomena becoming reachable by people.[1]
Making and release
Principal photography began on August 6, 2013, in Alberta, Canada, and lasted four months.[2] Shooting also took place in Iceland, representing two extraterrestrial planets.[3] When Spielberg relocated his DreamWorks studio away from Paramount in 2009, the studio required a different director for the film.[4] Christopher Nolan had a meeting with Thorne to talk about how spacetime would be utilized in the narrative.[4]
Principal photography wrapped up in December 2013, and the production budget was $165 million.[5]
What the cited sources add
The Empire article notes that the film originated around eight years earlier at Paramount under Lynda Obst, after Thorne suggested a concept about "warped space-time."[6] Empire reports that Warner Bros. traded rights to co-finance a South Park movie and other properties for a stake in Interstellar.[6] The Empire article states that the first hour, set on a resource-depleted Earth, was inspired by the Dust Bowl of 1930s America.[6] According to the GQ article, the CGI team modeled the black hole using information from academic journals provided by Thorne.[7]
The GQ article describes the black hole as possibly one of the most scientifically accurate ever created in a sci-fi film.[7] Levy's article states that the 1/15th scale miniature of the Endurance ring module spanned 25 feet.[8]
