Derby of the Eternal Enemies

The Derby of the Eternal Enemies: Greece's fiercest football rivalry.

The Derby of the Eternal Enemies (Greek: Ντέρμπι των αιωνίων αντιπάλων), also known among fans as the Mother of All Battles (Greek: μητέρα όλων των μαχών), is an association football derby contested between the two most successful clubs of Greece, Olympiacos from Piraeus and Panathinaikos from Athens.

FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid CF
Competition Scope
La Liga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Champions League, Supercopa de España

Lore & Background

The rivalry traces back to social, cultural and regional differences. Panathinaikos, founded in 1908, comes from Athens and was considered the classic representative of the high class and old Athenian society. Olympiacos, founded in 1925, comes from the port city of Piraeus, attracting supporters from working class areas. Olympiacos' early success provided a way for the people of Piraeus to express contempt for wealthier classes, and the club attracted fans from all over Greece who believed themselves victims of social and political unfairness.

In Their Own Story

Floodlights slice through the evening haze to ignite the pristine green pitch where two armies lock horns: the stark white of the visitors against the deep blaugrana stripes of the hosts. There is no casual chatter here, only the rhythmic, thunderous drumming and the swelling tide of 'Visca Barça' chants that vibrate through the concrete stands. When the referee's whistle finally pierces the tension, time seems to fracture; for ninety minutes, this is not a match, but a visceral battle for identity, history, and pride.

Reader's Guide

The derby is traditionally included among the world's top 10 greatest football derbies by international media. American network CNN ranked it among the ten greatest football rivalries of all-time. In October 2014, BBC named it 'Europe's maddest derby'. In September 2019, Daily Mirror ranked it as the fifth most important derby in the world. Olympiacos is the most successful Greek club domestically, with a record 84 major official titles to Panathinaikos' 44. Until 2024, Panathinaikos boasted better European performance, including a European Cup final in 1971. In 2024, Olympiacos won the UEFA Conference League, becoming the first Greek team to win an official UEFA title.
