Bayern Munich was founded in 1900 by eleven players, led by Franz John. The club found success in the 1970s under the captaincy of Franz Beckenbauer, winning the European Cup three consecutive times (1974–1976). The 8–2 defeat in Lisbon was a turning point for Barcelona. In the opening 10 minutes, Thomas Müller fired Bayern ahead after a one-two with Robert Lewandowski. David Alaba then sliced a cross from Jordi Alba into his own net to level the scores. Barcelona missed two opportunities: Luis Suárez was denied by Manuel Neuer and Lionel Messi hit the post. Bayern then scored three quick goals: Ivan Perišić in the 21st minute, Serge Gnabry in the 27th, and Müller again in the 31st. Suárez pulled one back in the 57th minute, but Joshua Kimmich made it 5–2 in the 63rd. Bayern scored three more in the closing 10 minutes: Lewandowski headed his 14th goal of the campaign in the 82nd minute, and Philippe Coutinho—on loan from Barcelona—scored twice, in the 85th and 89th minutes, to make the final score 8–2. Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué stated the club needed structural changes on all levels, while president Josep Maria Bartomeu described it as a 'disaster.' Three days later, Barcelona sacked manager Quique Setién, followed the next day by sporting director Eric Abidal. Setién was replaced on 19 August by Ronald Koeman. The defeat led Lionel Messi to demand to leave Barcelona, citing the club's failure to compete for the Champions League after previous debacles: 0–3 against Juventus in 2016–17, 0–3 against Roma in 2017–18, and 0–4 against Liverpool in 2018–19.
