Creation and conception
Takashi Takeuchi conceived Sakura Matou during the early development of Fate/stay night, aiming to create an attractive heroine with a quiet personality who would be popular. He considered her a typical eroge heroine, and more erotic content was written for her than for other female characters. The creators viewed her as a woman who loves sex, and the player's perception was intended to be that of a bride before the wedding. Writer Kinoko Nasu wanted Sakura to contrast with Rin Tohsaka based on their different pasts.
Takeuchi designed the shadow that corrupts her, and the idea of Dark Sakura was created to frighten players. Nasu liked the design. Sakura's initial concept was based on Fujino Asagami from Kara no Kyoukai. In the following game, she was reworked to have a lighter personality.
Type Moon considers Sakura their most popular heroine despite her tragic nature. Nasu enjoyed Noriko Shitaya's Japanese portrayal.
Appearances
Sakura is introduced in Fate/stay night as a first-year high-school student and the sister of Shinji Matou, a friend of protagonist Shirou Emiya. After Shirou's father Kiritsugu dies, Sakura often visits Shirou's home to help with chores. Though Shinji is from a sorcerer family, Sakura has no knowledge of her family's craft. She is outwardly shy and has a long-standing crush on Shirou.
She plays a minor part in the Fate and Unlimited Blade Works routes. In the Heaven's Feel route, she is the lead heroine and her backstory is expanded. In an anime-original storyline, she is kidnapped by Caster as a sacrifice because she has latent magic circuits. During a rescue attempt, she and Rin are confirmed to be sisters separated in early childhood.
Sakura is a powerful mage and Rider's true Master, having used a command spell to give control to Shinji. Her magic manipulates the rare Imaginary Numbers. In Heaven's Feel, it is revealed that she underwent years of torture and sexual abuse by Shinji and her grandfather Zōken Matō, leaving her psychologically scarred. Zōken implanted a piece of the Grail into her, turning her into the Black Grail.
She gradually sinks into depravity and becomes Dark Sakura. Torn between her usual self and her repressed rage, she initially intends to sacrifice herself but later seeks vengeance after her sister Rin expresses a desire to kill her.
Reception
Sakura Matou has been a popular figure among Fate fans. In the Type Moon 10th anniversary poll, she ranked eighth overall. A Newtype survey placed her as the 19th most beloved female anime character of the 2010s. She earned fifth place in the 2017 Newtype anime award for best female character for her work in Presage Flower, and climbed to second in 2019 for Lost Butterfly.
Writer Gen Urobuchi admired her part in Heaven’s Feel, noting it shows a darker side of women while Shirou still embraces her. The visual novel’s sex scenes are often cut; Kotaku reported that Shirou’s encounter with Sakura turned into an internet meme where her nudity is swapped with various images. A themed cafe, “Fate/stay night Heaven’s Feel Sakura Cafe,” ran in Osaka and Tokyo in 2017, playing recordings of her voice. Rice Digital argued the sexual content carries a serious theme because Sakura’s backstory creates her discomfort.
English voice actor Bryce Papenbrook told Crunchyroll he was eager for Shirou’s role in the Heaven’s Feel film due to the bond between Shirou and Sakura. The Artifice praised Sakura’s character and backstory.
