Dominic Toretto
Leave your engine running, but never leave a family member behind.
Dominic 'Dom' Toretto is the fictional main protagonist of the Fast & Furious franchise, portrayed by Vin Diesel since his debut in The Fast and the Furious (2001). Created by screenwriter Gary Scott Thompson after reading a May 1998 Vibe magazine article on street racing, Dom serves as the patriarch of a tight-knit group of racers. He is characterized by his gruff demeanor, volatile temper when family is threatened, and an unwavering code of morality and loyalty. As the leader, he transitioned from working as an auto mechanic to orchestrating multi-million dollar heists and illicit government jobs, all while raising a son with his wife, Letty Ortiz.

Lore & Background
Dom's life is defined by the trauma of witnessing his father, Jack, die in a stock car race in 1989 when rival Kenny Linder ran him off the track. The crash killed Jack instantly at 120 miles per hour, leaving Dom to care for his younger sister, Mia. In retaliation, Dom attacked Linder with a wrench so violently that he was banned from racetracks for life. This history of violence and loss shaped his protective nature over his crew. Throughout the series, Dom has committed numerous high-speed semi-hijackings, stealing millions in electronics and later $100 million in cash from drug lord Hernan Reyes. He spent years running from the law until he surrendered to face a 25-year-to-life sentence in Fast & Furious, only to be sprung by his team. His loyalty was tested repeatedly, notably when he had to save Letty from amnesia and combat the Shaw brothers after Deckard killed Han.
Reader's Guide
Dom acts as the group's strongest and most skilled racer, a title persistently challenged by his friend and brother-in-law, Brian O'Conner. His vehicle of choice is the iconic 1970 Dodge Charger, which he worked on with his father before Jack's death. In Tokyo Drift, he appears in a cameo driving a gunmetal silver 1970 Plymouth Road Runner won from Han Lue. Dom's leadership style involves reassembling his crew for specific missions, such as the $100 million heist in Rio de Janeiro where they allied with bounty hunter Luke Hobbs against Hernan Reyes. He also led the mission to capture Owen Shaw in London after learning Letty was alive but suffering from amnesia. Despite being a fugitive and facing life imprisonment, Dom consistently prioritizes his family's safety over his own freedom, often turning himself in or making deals with government agencies like DSS agent Hobbs.
