Sequel series to the 1988 film Willow.

Last updated

Warwick Davis reprised his role as Willow Ufgood from the original film.[1] The series was produced by Lucasfilm and premiered on Disney+ on November 30, 2022.[1]

Making and release

Discussions about continuing Willow began as early as 2005, with George Lucas commenting about Lucasfilm going back to television.[2] Jonathan Entwistle was then hired to replace Chu but also exited due to production delays from a recasting.[3] Stephen Woolfenden ultimately directed the first two episodes of the series.[3] Disney+ gave the series a green light in October 2020, with Jon M. Chu initially attached to direct the first episode.[3]

Citing production delays and personal reasons, Jon M. Chu announced his departure from the director role in January 2021.[3] At Dragon Studios, the production built five new stages covering a combined area of 28,000 square feet.[4] A six-acre area at Dragon Studios was used to construct the set for Tir Asleen Castle.[5]

What the cited sources add

O'Hara found the series, despite the absence of Val Kilmer's Madmartigan, to be a worthy successor to the original film.[6] The series was officially cancelled after one season in March 2023, as reported by Deadline Hollywood.[7][8] The show was removed from Disney+ on May 26, 2023, as part of a broader content-removal purge.[9][8]
