History
George Lucas started Lucasfilm on December 10, 1971, in San Rafael, California. The company’s first movie, American Graffiti (1973), shot some scenes in downtown San Rafael under Lucas’s direction and was a hit with both critics and audiences. By the mid-1970s, Lucasfilm was working out of the Universal Studios Lot. While making American Graffiti, Lucas began early work on what would become Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. After Universal turned down funding for Star Wars, Lucas pitched it to 20th Century-Fox, which accepted. Released on May 25, 1977, in a limited run, Star Wars earned huge praise and box office success. Lucasfilm officially incorporated on September 12, 1977. Lucas set up a subsidiary called Star Wars Corporation, Inc. to handle legal and financial matters for A New Hope, including copyright and merchandising. That subsidiary also produced the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. Lucas hired Charles Weber to run the company, but in 1980, after Weber suggested selling Skywalker Ranch to raise $50 million for other investments, Lucas fired him and cut half the Los Angeles staff. The subsidiary was dissolved that year, and its operations moved into Lucasfilm’s main divisions. The Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980.
Company structure
Lucasfilm's divisions include Industrial Light & Magic and Lucas Studio for visual effects; ILM Vancouver, ILM London, ILM Mumbai, and ILM Sydney; ILM Immersive; Skywalker Sound for post-production sound; Lucasfilm Games for video games; Lucasfilm Animation; Lucas Licensing for licensing and merchandising; Lucas Books, a book publishing imprint of Del Rey Books; and the Lucasfilm Story Group, established in 2012, with Pablo Hidalgo and Leland Chee as its first two revealed members, headed by Kiri Hart.
