Red Riding Hood (2006 film)

A musical retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with a teen twist.

Red Riding Hood is a 2006 American fantasy musical film. Morgan Thompson plays the title character, Henry Cavill portrays the Hunter, and Joey Fatone appears as the Wolf. The movie is notable as the film acting debut of Ben Platt, who later gained fame in Pitch Perfect six years afterward.

In the story, a teenage girl named Claire, who is obsessed with boy bands and plans to sneak out to meet friends, listens to her babysitting grandmother tell the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. Claire and her brother Matt frequently interrupt to suggest ways to improve the narrative.

The tale follows Red, who lives with her family in a lighthouse by the ocean. She is sent through the woods to her grandmother’s cliffside house, carrying soup for her sick grandmother. Despite her mother’s warning about a wolf in the woods, Red takes the shortcut anyway. The wolf spots her and begins stalking her. When three characters called the Ashleys (based on the Three Billy Goats Gruff) mug Red, the wolf arrives, eats them, and finds Red’s iPod. The wolf, disguised as a man, eventually catches Red but gets stuck in a trap; Red frees him. Before he can eat her, a hunter on a white horse with a blunderbuss scares the wolf away. The hunter warns Red that the creature is a werewolf who ate his own parents, but Red does not believe him.

Stranded in the woods, Red calls her brother for help and prays for safety. Matt arrives but is also stranded. They reach their grandmother’s house, but the wolf has already eaten her and taken her place. The wolf nearly eats Red, but Matt distracts him, leading to a chase. The hunter returns, but the wolf almost eats Rusty (the brother) until Red tosses a silver bullet into the wolf’s mouth. Light pours from the wolf’s body, and he explodes, releasing everyone he had swallowed whole. The unharmed wolf then finds the Gypsy Fortune Teller who cursed him (and was his first victim) and convinces her to remove the curse.

Back in the present, Grandma finishes the story and offers to tell a sequel. Claire decides to stay home instead of sneaking out. She, Grandma, and Matt order pizza, which is delivered by a boy who looks like the Hunter from the story.

The cast includes Morgan Thompson as Red and Claire, Sam Stone as Rusty and Matt, Lainie Kazan as Grandma, Debi Mazar as Red’s Mother, Daniel Roebuck as Red’s Father, Joey Fatone as Jack WereWolf, Ashley Rose Orr as Ashley Alvares-Mitchell (Ashley #1), Andrea Bowen as Ashley Crane (Ashley #2), Callie Waterman as Ashley DeWitt (Ashley #3), Henry Cavill as Hunter and Pizza Delivery Boy, Cassandra Peterson as Hunter’s Mother, David Kaufman as Hunter’s Father, Suzanne Kent as The Gypsy Fortune Teller, Sung Hi Lee as The TV Reporter, Ben Platt as The Boy Scout, John Paragon as The Fisherman, and Donzaleigh Abernathy as The Newscaster.
