Giovanni da Verrazzano
Florentine explorer who mapped North America's east coast for France.
Last updated
The earliest recorded European exploration of that segment of the Atlantic Coast is his journey.[1]
Life and work
Verrazzano was born in Val di Greve, south of Florence, and recent research indicates he was born on July 20, 1491.[2] Verrazzano's ship La Dauphine departed on January 17, 1524, and neared Cape Fear on March 21, 1524.[3][4] His final voyage left Dieppe in early 1528, and he was allegedly killed and eaten by native Caribs on the island of Guadeloupe.[5][6] He took up residence in Dieppe, a port in the Kingdom of France, after 1506 and started his navigation career there.[7]
Around 1508, he likely sailed for the American coast with captain Thomas Aubert aboard the vessel La Pensée.[8] A second voyage was organized by Verrazzano in early 1527; he reached Brazil, took on a load of brazilwood, and came back to Dieppe in September.[9]
What the cited sources add
The Smithsonian Magazine account notes that the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, honoring the explorer, boasted the longest suspended span in the world at 4,260 feet when it opened 50 years ago.[10] The same source states that the bridge did not spell Verrazzano's name correctly.[10]
