Geography and history

About one in six Dutch people live in North Holland, giving it a population density over eight times the European average as of 2004.[3] Since 2019, Arthur van Dijk has held the position of King's Commissioner for North Holland.[4] Located in North Holland is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which ranks as the busiest airport in the Netherlands and the third-busiest in Europe.[4] A desire to explore merging into a single Randstad province was expressed in February 2011 by North Holland, Utrecht, and Flevoland.[5][6][7]

The First Rutte cabinet gave a positive reception to this idea, and South Holland was also envisioned as part of the merger.[5]

What the cited sources add

A 2011 NOS report states that the provinces of North Holland, Utrecht, and Flevoland were considering a merger.[6] A 2011 NRC Handelsblad article by Marije Willems confirms that these three provinces were researching a merger.[7] The same NRC article notes that the cabinet proposed scaling up provincial government in the Randstad to prevent new administrative support structures.[7] Population data from citypopulation.de shows that as of the most recent figures, North Holland had 3,010,044 inhabitants, with 1,478,559 males and 1,513,457 females.[8]
