The Showbiz Show with David Spade

A comedic parody of celebrity news programs.

David Spade hosted this Comedy Central series, a weekly parody of celebrity news shows like Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood. The concept grew out of his "Hollywood Minute" segment on Saturday Night Live. The show originally began as a daily pilot called Gone Hollywood with Greg Giraldo as host and Spade as executive producer. After that pilot, Comedy Central asked Spade to also host, but he agreed only if the show became weekly. A competing pilot, The Hollywood Show with Brian Unger, was produced simultaneously; when it wasn't picked up, its title was used for Spade's show, until Spade suggested The Showbiz Show. The series debuted in September 2005 and ran for three seasons, ending in June 2007 after Comedy Central declined to renew it. Each episode featured Spade delivering biting one-liners about the week's entertainment news, often insulting celebrities. Correspondents included Brian Posehn, Andrew Daly, Scott Adsit, Nick Swardson, and Jessi Klein, with Rob Lowe occasionally appearing between commercials to deadpan a joke. The Ninja from Ask a Ninja also appeared to describe the new season of The Sopranos. A similar show, Lights Out with David Spade, premiered on Comedy Central in July 2019.
