Genealogy

Before his accession, Go-Mizunoo was known by the personal name Kotohito or Masahito. He was the third son of Emperor Go-Yōzei and his consort Konoe Sakiko, and had eleven full siblings. He resided in the Kyoto Imperial Palace with concubines and fathered 33 children with his empress and six concubines. His empress was Tokugawa Masako, daughter of Tokugawa Hidetata and Lady Oeyo, later known as Tōfuku-mon'in. Among their children were Imperial Princess Okiko, who became Empress Meishō, and Princess Onna-ni, who married Konoe Hisatsugu. Other children included Prince Sukehito, Prince Waka, Imperial Princess Akiko, Imperial Princess Yoshiko, and Princess Kiku. With lady-in-waiting Yotsutsuji Yotsuko, he had Prince Kamo and Princess Bunchi.

Events

Go-Mizunoo became emperor after his father Go-Yōzei abdicated in 1611, when he was 16 years old. The succession was considered received through senso, followed by acceding through sokui. His reign coincided with the leadership of Tokugawa Hidetada and Tokugawa Iemitsu. In 1614, the Siege of Osaka occurred, during which Shōgun Hidetada defeated Toyotomi Hideyori and burned Osaka Castle. A strong earthquake struck Kyoto in November 1614, and a great bell for Daibutsu Temple was cast that year. The Osaka Summer Battle in 1615 saw Ieyasu and Hidetada capture and burn Osaka Castle again; Hideyori was thought to have died by suicide, but his body was never found, and rumors suggested he fled to Satsuma. Tokugawa Masako entered the palace as a consort and married the emperor in 1620, the same year severe fires broke out in Kyoto.
