The plot follows Adam Merkin, a white graduate student at Berkeley, who attends a rap battle for his thesis and unexpectedly steps in to freestyle against a white rapper accused of cultural appropriation. Impressed, veteran rapper Behn Grym mentors Adam, who begins competing under the name 'Bodied.' Adam's journey strains his relationship with his girlfriend Maya and his father, a best-selling professor, and leads to a climactic battle where Adam betrays Grym by using personal details about Grym's daughter's cystic fibrosis to win. Afterward, Grym ends their friendship, stating that Adam's cruelty is real, not an act.
