The series began with NASCAR 98 and NASCAR 99 in 1997 and 1998. EA Sports released NASCAR Thunder 2002 in 2001, and from then on, Jeff Gordon (2002), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (2003), and Tony Stewart (2004) appeared on the cover. In 2004, the game was renamed NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup, adding new features to reflect recent changes to NASCAR, with Kevin Harvick on the cover. The next year, the title changed to NASCAR 06: Total Team Control, featuring Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson on the cover, and introduced car-swapping with teammates and voice-recognition support for the crew chief. The following year, NASCAR 07 featured Elliott Sadler on the cover and added a speed blur effect and a momentum system for drivers' strong and weak track types.
