Dragon Age
A fantasy RPG series set in the world of Thedas.
Dragon Age is a fantasy role-playing video game series created by BioWare, set on the fictional continent of Thedas. The franchise includes four main games: *Dragon Age: Origins* (2009), *Dragon Age II* (2011), *Dragon Age: Inquisition* (2014), and *Dragon Age: The Veilguard* (2024), which have been released across multiple platforms including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows, OS X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The first three games also feature expansions and downloadable content. The series has been both commercially successful and critically praised for its storytelling, world-building, character development, voice acting, and player-driven choices. Beyond video games, the franchise has expanded into spin-off games, novels, graphic novels, comic books, a web series, an animated film, an animated television series, and other licensed merchandise.
The world of Thedas (an acronym for The Dragon Age Setting) is the only known continent, and the main games primarily take place in its southern regions. Its history is measured in Ages, each lasting a century, beginning with the founding of the Chantry—the dominant religious institution. Several human nations are central to the series: Ferelden, a southeastern kingdom with a peerage system similar to England’s; the Orlesian Empire to the west, where nobles scheme for favor under an absolute ruler; and the Tevinter Imperium in the north, a magocracy ruled by an Imperial Archon that once conquered southern Thedas. Other key regions include the Free Marches, a confederation of independent city-states north of Ferelden, and Orzammar, one of the few remaining dwarven cities located in the Deep Roads—an ancient underground highway system built by dwarves.
Social class and political dynamics in Thedas are shaped by race, heritage, and occupation. Slavery is legal in Tevinter but outlawed elsewhere. Human nobility commands respect across the continent, while elves are often treated as second-class citizens, living in overcrowded urban ghettos called alienages or serving as slaves in Tevinter. Many elves, known as the Dalish, live as nomads in the Dales region of eastern Orlais, striving to preserve their lost culture after the ancient elven empire of Elvhenan collapsed. Dwarven society is rigidly caste-based and practices ancestor worship.

Lore & Background
The Dragon Age franchise is set in the world of Thedas, an acronym for The Dragon Age Setting, with events from the main series games taking place primarily in its southern regions. Thedas is the only continent of the known world and consists of various clans, nations and states inhabited by multiple humanoid peoples. Several kingdoms and countries have emerged over nine centuries of a calendar era based on the traditionally reckoned year of the founding of The Chantry, the dominant religious organization in the series. Three out of several human nations play a prominent role: the kingdom of Ferelden, the Orlesian Empire, and the Tevinter Imperium. Other noteworthy civilizations include the Free Marches and the Kingdom of Orzammar.
Race, class, and heritage combine to determine social class and political dynamics in Thedas. A recurring theme consists of power struggles and internal conflicts between and within various factions. Tevinter society practices slavery, while elves are often second-class citizens. Dwarven society is organized around a rigid caste system and ancestor worship. A fourth sapient humanoid species, the Qunari, are large horned humanoids who follow a totalitarian civil religion called the Qun. Magic-wielding characters known as mages have access to the Fade, a parallel dimension, and are often controlled by the Chantry in southern Thedas. The Darkspawn and their recurring Blights are considered the single biggest threat to the civilizations of Thedas.
