The club's origins trace back to 1899 with the founding of Frankfurter Fußball-Club Victoria von 1899 and Frankfurter Fußball-Club Kickers von 1899, which merged in 1911 to form Frankfurter Fußball Verein (Kickers-Victoria). That club later joined with a gymnastics club in 1920 to form TuS Eintracht Frankfurt von 1861. The football and gymnastics sections separated in 1927. Eintracht won their first and only German championship in 1959, defeating Kickers Offenbach 5–3 in the final. They reached the 1960 European Cup final, losing 7–3 to Real Madrid. The club was a founding member of the Bundesliga in 1963 and finished 3rd in the inaugural season.
