Dead Rising 3

A 2013 action-adventure game with open-world zombie survival and crafting.

Dead Rising 3

Dead Rising 3 is an action-adventure game from 2013, developed by Capcom Vancouver and published by Microsoft Studios. It launched alongside the Xbox One on November 22, 2013, and later received a Windows version from Capcom on September 5, 2014. Critics generally gave it positive marks for its gameplay and visuals, though they took issue with changes to the gameplay, art direction, story, characters, and various technical problems.

**Gameplay** Players control new protagonist Nick Ramos from a third-person perspective, scrounging for supplies and weapons to fight zombies and complete missions. The open world is significantly larger than the settings of the first two *Dead Rising* games combined, and the game can display three times as many zombies on-screen as its predecessor. Saving is no longer restricted to toilets—players can save anywhere. A "Nightmare Mode" brings back the traditional time limit and limited save points for those who want it. Load times occur when transitioning between areas or fast traveling.

The crafting system from *Dead Rising 2* returns and expands. Players can still create "combo weapons," but now they can do so anywhere without needing a workbench. "Combo vehicles" are also new—for example, combining a motorcycle and a steamroller produces a "RollerHawg." Each combo vehicle has two seats and a secondary blue attack to aid cooperative play. Driving is key to exploring the city of Los Perdidos. Blueprints for new combo weapons and vehicles are hidden throughout the world.

The game optionally uses Kinect and Xbox SmartGlass. With Kinect, loud noises from the player can attract zombies, but shouting can also distract them; the microphone is tuned so that attracting zombies feels deliberate. SmartGlass lets players locate items, find abandoned storefronts, set waypoints, and access exclusive missions that unlock apps—such as calling in airstrikes, drone support, or area-wide flares to fight or lure the undead.

**Multiplayer** Two-player cooperative play is available in all game modes except an explicit single-player mode. In Casual, Completionist, Speed Run, and Hardcore modes, a second player can join seamlessly at any time if a match is found, or players can choose to start in Multiplayer directly. The primary player controls Nick Ramos; the second player takes the role of Dick, a trucker surviving the outbreak.

Lore & Background

Dead Rising 3 follows new protagonist Nick Ramos in a third-person perspective as he searches for supplies and weapons to fight zombies and complete missions in the vast open world of Los Perdidos. The game world is much larger than the worlds of Dead Rising and Dead Rising 2 combined, and it can render three times as many zombies on-screen as its predecessor. Players can save progress anywhere, unlike earlier games that limited saves to toilets, and a 'Nightmare Mode' offers the traditional time limit and save options. The game has load times when transitioning between areas or fast traveling.

The crafting system from Dead Rising 2 is expanded: players can create 'combo weapons' on the fly without a workbench, and also build 'combo vehicles' such as a motorcycle-steamroller hybrid called the 'RollerHawg'.

Reader's Guide

Dead Rising 3 received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised its gameplay and visuals but criticized changes to gameplay, art direction, story, characters, and technical issues. The game represents a significant technical leap for the series, with a larger open world and higher zombie counts, while introducing quality-of-life improvements like saving anywhere and on-the-fly crafting. Its cooperative features and optional Kinect/SmartGlass integration were notable for the time. The plot, set in 2021, follows Nick Ramos as he discovers his immunity to the zombie infection and uncovers a government conspiracy involving biological weapons. The game's legacy includes its role as a launch title for the Xbox One and its expansion of the series' crafting and multiplayer mechanics.
