Crackdown 3

A delayed open-world game with mixed reviews and a dead multiplayer mode.

Crackdown 3

Crackdown 3, an action-adventure game from 2019, was developed by Sumo Digital and published by Microsoft Studios for Windows and Xbox One. It picks up the series roughly nine years after the 2010 Xbox 360 title *Crackdown 2*. Initially planned for a 2016 release, it faced several delays before launching on February 15, 2019. Critics gave it mixed reviews, appreciating the return of familiar series features and the fun factor, but faulting it for a lack of new ideas and a dated feel.

**Gameplay** The game keeps the core loop from the first two *Crackdown* games: players must dismantle multiple organizations controlling the city of New Providence by eliminating their bosses and Kingpins, wrecking their facilities, and weakening their infrastructure. To do this, players can use a range of weapons—guns, grenades, rocket launchers—along with their own physical strength. Any vehicle found in the city can be driven. Picking up a new weapon or driving a new vehicle for the first time adds it to the player's collection at any supply point. The "Skills for Kills" system returns: killing enemies with various tools and collecting hidden pickups around the city rewards orbs that boost core skills—agility, firearms, strength, explosives, and driving. Each skill level-up unlocks a new maneuver or item tied to that skill, like a ground-pound from leveling strength or a double-jump from agility. Agility Orbs, Rooftop Races, Driving Rings, and Road Races are scattered throughout the city, each increasing the related skill when collected or completed; Hidden Orbs boost all skills at once.

Different activities are linked to specific bosses and underbosses. Completing tasks like destroying vehicle lockups, freeing monorail stations, or wrecking machinery gives the player more intel on each boss. Once enough intel is gathered, the boss's location appears on the map. Each branch of TerraNova controls a part of the final boss's defenses, and taking down a branch boss weakens one aspect of the final fortress. However, causing too much chaos in one branch raises the player's heat level, sending more reinforcements from that branch. Staying at the highest heat level too long triggers a city-wide lockdown, forcing the player to kill a set number of reinforcements to lift it and regain access to supply points.

Lore & Background

Crackdown 3 was announced at Microsoft's E3 2014 press conference as an Xbox One exclusive, stemming from talks with Dave Jones, who had left Realtime Worlds and joined Cloudgine. Cloudgine developed cloud computing technology for destructible environments, demonstrated at a Microsoft developer conference in April 2014. The game was officially revealed as Crackdown 3 at Gamescom 2015, with cloud-powered real-time destruction showcased. However, full-scale destruction was only available in online multiplayer modes, while the campaign had limited destruction regardless of player count. In January 2018, Epic Games acquired Cloudgine, and Jones left Reagent to join Epic. Sumo Digital remained the principal developer throughout.

Reader's Guide

Crackdown 3 received mixed reviews upon release. Critics praised the return of core features from its predecessors and the level of enjoyment, but criticized a lack of innovation and dated design. The game retains the 'Skills for Kills' system, where killing enemies with different tools and collecting orbs increases core skills: agility, firearms, strength, explosives, and driving. The competitive multiplayer mode, Wrecking Zone, featured nearly fully destructible maps but was quickly abandoned and described as 'dead'. The plot follows super-powered Agents dismantling the corporation TerraNova in New Providence after a global power outage. Despite delays and developer changes, the game was released on 15 February 2019. Its legacy is that of a long-delayed title that failed to meet expectations, with its most touted feature—cloud-based destruction—confined to a now-abandoned multiplayer mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Crackdown 3 and when did it come out?

Crackdown 3 is an open-world action-adventure title built by Sumo Digital and released by Microsoft Studios for Xbox One and PC. It hit shelves in mid-February 2019 after multiple delays from its original 2016 target, picking up the series' story about nine years after Crackdown 2.

What can the player actually do in Crackdown 3?

You play as a super-soldier who can mix three upgradeable abilities—raw strength, super-speed, and flight—to brawl through enemies and zip across a sprawling city. The central loop asks you to break apart criminal syndicates by hunting down their lieutenants and kingpins in an open-world sandbox.

How does the Crackdown 3 story wrap up?

The campaign ends with the player dismantling the final criminal organization threatening the city, fulfilling the mission to restore government control. The narrative is relatively lean, and most reviews noted the plot served mainly as a thin frame around the combat and traversal loops.

Why does Crackdown 3 matter to the franchise?

It confirmed that Microsoft still owned the Crackdown IP and brought the series' signature super-soldier formula to a new generation of hardware after a long gap. Despite lukewarm critical scores, it kept the brand in active development and set the stage for any future entries.

What happened to Crackdown 3's multiplayer?

The game shipped with a co-op online mode, but Microsoft shut that service down shortly after launch, leaving players with no persistent multiplayer option. The abrupt removal, paired with the game's mixed reception, cemented its reputation as a fun-but-incomplete entry.
