The Canal Killer Returns

Amsterdamned II picks up nearly four decades after the 1988 original, weaving a new mystery around Amsterdam's waterways. A young investigator, Tara Lee, is thrust into a case when an American couple vanishes from a midnight canal cruise, only to be found dead on a burning boat the next morning. As more victims surface—dragged underwater, disembowelled on anchors, drowned in a mini-car that plunged into the canals—Tara's chief recognizes the signature of an expert diver and summons his old friend, retired detective Eric Visser. The narrative layers a modern procedural investigation with unsettling supernatural undercurrents. A disgraced academic insists the killer is the Bullebak, a creature from Dutch folklore that haunts the canals, while Eric grows uneasy about the killer's near-superhuman abilities. The story takes a sharp turn when DNA evidence resurfaces, suggesting the man Eric originally caught may have been innocent. The film culminates in a military task force deployment, a sewer lair ambush, and a final reveal that the body on the dock belongs to the original killer's daughter—a Special Forces diver—leaving Eric unconvinced the threat is over. The closing image of bubbles rising during a canal race leaves the audience in deliberate suspense.

A Long Road to the Sequel

The path to Amsterdamned II stretched across more than three decades. In a 2013 interview with Schokkend Nieuws, director Dick Maas revealed that during the 1990s he had contemplated a follow-up titled Rotterdoom, set in Rotterdam, but the project never came to fruition. Years later, in 2022, the Dutch film funding body NL Film approached Maas about a sequel, yet he turned down the offer. It was not until December 2023 that the sequel was officially greenlit, with Maas confirmed as writer, composer, and director. Principal photography kicked off on 8 September 2024 in Amsterdam, with additional scenes shot in Alkmaar, and wrapped on 18 December. The production leaned heavily on modern technology, incorporating over 300 visual effect shots and employing Generative AI for planning, visualization, and effects work. Marketing began with a teaser trailer in December 2024, followed by two full trailers in October and November 2025, building anticipation for the December release.

Box Office Success and Mixed Reviews

Amsterdamned II opened to a warm audience reception despite divided critical opinion. The film premiered for press and guests at the historic Tuschinski Theatre on 1 December 2025 before hitting Dutch cinemas on 4 December, distributed by Splendid Film. Critics generally praised the action sequences and Maas' direction but found the script and dialogue wanting. Commercially, the sequel proved a strong performer. It crossed the 100,000-ticket threshold to earn the Golden Film award and finished as the fifth most-visited Dutch film of 2025, with just over 214,000 tickets sold that year and a cumulative total exceeding 301,000 by early 2026. The film also made history as the first Dutch feature released in IMAX format. The release was not without controversy. Kijkwijzer initially assigned a 12 rating for violence, fear, drug use, and coarse language, but a month after release a complaint was filed over a scene involving a drag queen, prompting the addition of a discrimination symbol. The film became available on Amazon Prime Video on 9 March 2026, with Incredible Film handling international sales.

Reuniting the Cast and Recontextualizing the Original

Amsterdamned II's most compelling hook is the return of Huub Stapel as Detective Eric Visser, reprising the role he first played in the 1988 slasher. His presence anchors the sequel in the legacy of the original while the story deliberately recontextualizes it: DNA testing, requested by the daughter of the man Eric caught decades earlier, indicates his genetic material was absent from every old crime scene, raising the possibility that he was innocent all along. Tatum Dagelet also returns as Eric's daughter Anneke Visser, bridging the two films' timelines. The new cast includes Holly Mae Brood as the determined young detective Tara Lee, alongside Dunya Khayame, Tarik Moree, Ruben Brinkman, Mattijn Hartemink, and Pierre Bokma. The film's narrative structure—pairing a seasoned, world-weary investigator with a fresh-faced newcomer—mirrors the procedural dynamics of classic crime thrillers while the supernatural Bullebak thread injects a distinctly Dutch folkloric flavor that sets it apart from typical slasher fare.
